Liverpool unveiled thier new superstar signing today, former Atletico ace, Fernando Torres.
The new contract is reported to be for 6 years and worth just under £20 million.
This is exciting news for The Reds and should solve the many scoring problems they suffered for most of last year.
As far as Torres becoming acclimated to the English style of football, I’m sure that, just like most foreign players, it’ll take him a month or two before he feels 100% comfortable with his new surroundings. But the one thing that’ll make his transition a whole lot smoother is the fact that he’s playing with so many Spanish speaking players (Xabi Alonso, Mark Gonzales, Luis Garcia, Javier Macherano, Jose Reina and, of course, coach Rafael Benitez). It’s gotta help if you can just concentrate on the game and not your Berlitz language books.
But, what now with Craig Bellamy and Peter Crouch? Well, as most of us know, Craig Bellamy is the player that no one wants to play with–just ask Alan Shearer and John Arne Riise. He’ll be shipped somewhere at some point but I think we can all agree his Anfield days are over.
It’s a little trickier, however, with Peter Crouch. He’s a good player and a great guy to have come off the bench but the England international is not going to be happy if he’s only getting 15 minutes a game. I think they’ll wait until the January transfer window before they deal with his situation.
Getting back to the Torres transfer, I was surprised to read that he and his mates were hard core Liverpool fans growing up. In fact, according to the soccernet.com story, a lot of his friends sport Liverpool tattoos and, last year, Fernando was pictured having “We Will Never Walk Alone” written on the inside of his Atletico captain armband.
Hey…I guess you gotta do what you gotta do in order to become £20 million richer.
